How Much Does a Web Designer in Cardiff Actually Cost in 2026?
Ask five Cardiff web designers for a quote on the same brief and you can easily get £500, £1,800, £3,200, £6,500 and £11,000 back. The brief did not change. The quote did. The reason is that "website" means almost nothing without scope attached, and most providers are happy to leave the scope vague until after the deposit clears.
This piece is the version of the cost question Studio 72 wishes someone had handed Cardiff small business owners three years ago — written from the receipts side, not the marketing side.
The honest 2026 range
For a small business in Cardiff, in 2026, the realistic price bands are:
- **£300–£800** — DIY platform (Wix, Squarespace, Shopify) with a freelancer styling it
- **£800–£2,500** — independent designer with a defined fixed-price package
- **£2,500–£6,000** — small studio doing a custom build with copy and basic SEO
- **£6,000–£15,000+** — full agency engagement with discovery, UX, content and integrations
There is no "correct" band. The correct band is the one where the scope of work matches what the business actually needs the site to do this year. Paying £8,000 for an agency build to support a £40-a-month service is a money fire. Paying £400 for a DIY job to launch a £4,000-a-month membership is a different kind of money fire.
Why quotes vary so wildly
Three things drive the variance and most clients never see them broken out:
- **Who writes the copy.** Copywriting that converts is a multi-thousand-pound discipline. If the quote does not name a copy owner, you are the copy owner.
- **What "SEO" means in the quote.** Some quotes mean "I installed Yoast and ticked some boxes." Others mean keyword research, on-page architecture, internal linking and schema. The price gap between those is enormous.
- **What happens after launch.** Hosting, backups, security patches, content updates and small bug fixes either live in a retainer or land back on you. The cheap quote almost always assumes the latter.
If a quote does not address those three lines, it is not really a quote. It is an opening price.
Cost vs. payback for a Cardiff SME
The right way to weigh a quote is against payback, not against another quote. Here is how that maths usually plays out:
| Build cost | Realistic outcome | Payback window |
|---|---|---|
| £497 one-page site | One extra £600–£900 trade job | A single job |
| £1,497 multi-page site | 2–4 extra enquiries a month at decent close rate | 2–4 months |
| £3,000 custom build | Supports a higher-ticket service or product launch | 4–8 months |
| £8,000+ agency build | Worthwhile when LTV per customer is in the thousands | 6–18 months |
The £8,000 build is not "better." It is appropriate for businesses where the average customer is worth £3,000+ in lifetime value, and where the site is doing serious work — gating leads, supporting a sales team, integrating with a CRM. For most Cardiff trades, salons, restaurants and single-location services, that scope is overkill.
What you should refuse to pay for
There are five line items Cardiff buyers regularly pay for that produce no measurable return:
- **Discovery workshops longer than 90 minutes** — anything beyond that is the agency learning your business on your time
- **Mood boards and design concepts that don't change the build** — a styled mockup that gets approved and then redone in code is a billable hour twice
- **"Bespoke" templates** — a £75 theme with the colours swapped is not bespoke
- **SEO retainers without monthly reporting** — if you cannot see what was done, it was not done
- **Year-one hosting at agency rates** — £40–£80/month for shared hosting is a margin grab; Vercel, Netlify and Cloudflare Pages will host most small-business sites for free or near-free
Cutting these out alone can take a £4,000 quote down to £2,000 with no loss to the finished site.
How Studio 72 prices it
The Studio 72 pricing is fixed because the scope is fixed:
| Package | Price | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | £497 | One-page site for a single-service business |
| Pro | £1,497 | Multi-page site for a small business with multiple services or locations |
| Signature | £2,997 | Custom build for businesses with a higher-value offer or specific functional needs |
Each package names what it includes — copy direction, deployment, basic SEO, mobile testing, launch support — so the price is a price, not a starting point.
A simple pre-quote checklist
Before you accept any web design quote in Cardiff in 2026, get three things in writing:
- **Who owns the copy and how many revision rounds are included.** Vague answers here cost you weeks later.
- **Which platform the site will live on, and what hosting will cost in year one and year two.** "We host it" is not an answer.
- **What is and is not included after launch.** A 30-day bug-fix window is normal. Anything described as "ongoing support" needs an hourly rate or a monthly figure.
If a provider cannot answer those three in five minutes, the quote is not ready to be a quote yet.
