10 Cardiff Small Business Website Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)

Most small business websites are not broken in one dramatic way. They leak in ten boring ways. None of the ten is fatal alone. All ten together turn a site that should be generating enquiries into a brochure that quietly costs the business £500–£2,000 a month in missed work.

These are the ten Studio 72 sees most often on Cardiff small business sites in 2026, in order of how much they cost to fix versus how much revenue they recover.

1. The phone number is hard to find on mobile

The single most common, single most expensive mistake. The phone number is in the footer, or in a contact page, or behind a burger menu. On mobile, where 70%+ of small business traffic now arrives, the visitor has to work to call you.

**Fix:** Phone number visible in the header, tap-to-call enabled, repeated in the hero section. Cost: 30 minutes. Revenue impact: typically 10–20% more inbound calls within a fortnight.

2. The hero says what the business is, not what it does for the customer

"Cardiff's leading bespoke web design studio" tells the visitor about you. "Get a fast, fixed-price website live in 72 hours" tells them what they get. The first sells the business. The second sells the offer.

**Fix:** Rewrite the hero to lead with the customer outcome. Keep the brand line as a sub-headline. Cost: 1–2 hours of copywriting. Revenue impact: noticeable lift in time-on-page within a week.

3. Reviews and proof are buried below the fold or absent

Visitors arrive sceptical. They want to see other people have used the business and not regretted it. If proof is on a separate "Testimonials" page nobody clicks, it is invisible.

**Fix:** Star rating + review count visible in the hero section. 2–3 short customer quotes on the homepage. Logos of clients or partners if relevant. Cost: 1 hour. Revenue impact: meaningful lift in form submissions.

4. The page is slow on mobile

Slow loading is the silent killer. A site that takes 5+ seconds to load on a phone loses roughly half its potential visitors before they see anything. Most Cardiff small business sites Studio 72 audits score below 50 on Lighthouse mobile.

**Fix:** Compress images, remove unused plugins, enable proper caching. Or rebuild on a fast stack. Cost: £400–£2,997 depending on approach. Revenue impact: high — see Page Speed: The £10K/Year Mistake.

5. No prices anywhere

Visitors who cannot find a price either leave or submit a "what does this cost?" enquiry that you then have to filter. Both outcomes waste time.

**Fix:** Even rough price ranges ("from £497", "£40–£75 per groom", "average call-out £85") improve enquiry quality dramatically. Cost: 30 minutes. Revenue impact: fewer enquiries but higher-quality ones — net more revenue.

6. The contact form has too many fields

Every additional form field cuts completion rate by roughly 5–8%. A 9-field form (name, email, phone, company, address, postcode, service required, budget, message) is converting at maybe 1%. A 3-field form (name, email, message) at 4%.

**Fix:** Cut the form to name + email + one optional message field. Anything else can be asked in the reply. Cost: 15 minutes. Revenue impact: typically 2–3× more enquiries.

7. No Google Business Profile linked

A Google Business Profile is the most important free SEO asset a Cardiff small business has. If the website does not link to it (and vice versa), Google has to work harder to associate the two, and the local search ranking suffers.

**Fix:** Claim and verify the Google Business Profile. Add the website URL on the profile. Add a link or embed the Google Maps location on the website's contact page. Cost: 1 hour including verification wait. Revenue impact: gradual lift in local search visibility over 4–8 weeks.

8. No schema markup

Schema is structured data that helps Google understand exactly what the page is. Without it, search results show the basic title and description. With it, you can get star ratings, opening hours, prices and FAQ accordions in the actual search results.

**Fix:** Add LocalBusiness, Review and FAQ schema. Cost: 2–4 hours, or included in Studio 72 Pro+ packages. Revenue impact: 15–35% CTR lift on existing rankings — see Schema Markup: The Free SEO Win.

9. The mobile menu hides important pages

Burger menus on mobile collapse navigation behind a tap. If the most important page (booking, services, prices) is in there, mobile visitors have to discover it. Many do not.

**Fix:** Move the primary CTA out of the burger menu and into a sticky bottom bar or header button. Cost: 1–2 hours. Revenue impact: more conversions from mobile traffic.

10. The site has no analytics

If the site is not measured, you cannot know which fixes worked. Many Cardiff small business sites have no analytics installed at all, or have Google Analytics from 2019 that nobody has logged into.

**Fix:** Install Plausible, Fathom or Google Analytics 4. Set up basic conversion tracking on the contact form. Check it weekly. Cost: 30 minutes. Revenue impact: indirect but significant — every other fix becomes measurable.

A scoring summary

Total time to fix all ten on a typical site: 1–2 days of focused work, plus the speed fix which may need a rebuild.

Total revenue impact, conservatively: £400–£1,500/month uplift for a small business with reasonable existing traffic. Compounding monthly.
